Local Fam Day Trip Options

FAM Tour #1
Blast from the Past
(Irvine Museum, JWA, UCI)

Start by exploring the Irvine Museum dedicated to the preservation and display of California art of the Impressionist Period (1890 - 1930). The Irvine Museum embraces a principal role in the education and furtherance of this beautiful and important regional variant of American Impressionism that has come to be associated with California and its remarkable landscape.

Take a guided tour through John Wayne Orange County Airport where you will learn about the new additions and changes, meet the resident police dogs and view the local art scene.

Starting at the center of campus, learn how the 21-acre Daniel Aldrich Park creates an oasis of serenity from which buildings radiate in a circular pattern, integrating natural open space with modern structure. UCI is among the fastest-growing UC campuses, is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), and is consistently ranked among the nation's best universities, public and private. Recent additions to UCI's growing number of professional schools and programs include public health, pharmaceutical sciences and nursing science.

FAM Tour #2
Stop & Smell the Roses
(Horseback Riding, Bird/Wildlife Sanctuary, Orange County Great Park Helium Balloon Ride)

Jump on a horse or just take a hike through one of many hiking and biking paths located in the Irvine Regional Park. Aside from picnic and playground areas, a boating lagoon, the Orange County Zoo, a miniature railroad, and wildlife and historical exhibits - it's possible to find some great off-the-beaten-path hiking trails here. Several miles of paved and unpaved trails suitable for bicycling, hiking, and horseback riding follow Santiago Creek and wind around the perimeter of the park for a peaceful nature experience.

Amid business centers, a university and a bustling city, the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary attracts visitors with its surprising sense of stillness in an urban setting. With its sweet smells and rustling sounds of willow, alder and cottonwoods, the sanctuary feels more like a faraway peaceful paradise than a rejuvenated wetlands near one of California's busiest freeways.

The Great Park Balloon is one of the largest tethered helium balloon (not hot air) and the first of its kind in the United States. It is environmentally safe, non-polluting, and virtually silent. The Balloon is always tethered to the ground with a steel cable and is never in a state of free flight, making it both a safe and fun experience for everyone.

FAM Tour #3
Shop Like You're in Spain
(Irvine Spectrum Center Tour, Ferris Wheel Ride)

The Irvine Spectrum Center is an outdoor mall built over a 10-year period. The unusual architecture of the mall is based on the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, figuring most prominently in the mall's second phase. The Center is known for its upscale family environment, its safety, and its ornate beauty with intricate tile work, massive archways, quaint canopy covered walkways, many many fountains (some of them interactive for kids) inspired from those found in Italy, Spain and Morocco. It's home to a 21-screen movie theater which' at the time of its completion, was the largest movie theater in the western United States. During development the Edwards company code-named it "The Big One'" which remained the movie theater's nickname for a while thereafter until numerous other theaters eclipsed its screen count. The Spectrum also features a large custom built Giant Wheel (Ferris Wheel) hand crafted in Italy and shipped through the Panama Canal, as well as a Carousel, fabricated in San Francisco.
